The need for establishing a
Rotary Club in the area of Paralimni became apparent about ten years
ago(i.e.1990) when some tentative contacts were made. However the first
serious attempt at forming a Rotary Club there was made some time later
at the initiative of PP Stelios Mandrides, Mr. Kallis Tekkis and Mr.
Yiannakis Kitazos, when a series of gathering took place on an exploratory
basis.
Finally, in August 1991 a small group of interested persons which included
Eleftherios Triaros, George Papantoniou and Constantinos Constantinou
invited PDG Phoebus Zachariades, the Governor's Representative in Cyprus,
to resume his efforts, with their help and assistance, for a final
decision.
PDG Zachariades carried out the usual Extension Survey which proved
positive, and then he sought the approval of the Governor to proceed with
the usual steps as prescribed in the Extension Manual.
The initial small group gradually grew, the prospective Rotarians being in
the mean time instructed in the principles and aims, as well as the
procedures of Rotary, with the help of some representatives of the Sponsor
Club of Famagusta.
Eventually, PDG Phoebus Zachariades was able to pre- pare and submit a
proper application for admission of the new Club to Rotary International
under the name of the Rotary Club of Famagusta -Cavo Greco.
The application was approved on the 27th May 1992 and since then the new
Club has been functioning regularly and smoothly,
Although it may be rightly said that PGD Phoebus Zachariades was the
architect of the new Club, mention must also be made of the valuable help
given in the matter by PDG Christodoulos Karakannas, PP Stelios Mandrides
and PP Prodromos Papavassiliou and others who traveled from Nicosia,
Limassol and Larnaca to take part in the meetings.
