Open Debate on
the Annan Plan
Although Rotary is a non Political organization it is required by both Rotary International and our District that members and clubs work towards the enhancement of peace in the region and the world in general. During the District Conference, a Special Award called “The Peace Performance Shield” is awarded to a club that has worked towards the propagation of peace in the region. The club Service Director proposed to hold an open debate with the participation of the public to discuss the various details of the Annan Plan, since most of our members and the public in general are evidently not aware of its technical details. The panel speaker are: Alecos Markides ex Attorney General, Dr Panos Passiardis, Professor of Economics at the University of Cyprus, Eleni Mavrou MP, Yiouli Taki of PRIO and Kalliopi Agapiou Iosifidou, European Chair Jean Monnet, University of Cyprus. The debate will be monitored by our own Rtn Masis Der Parthogh.
The event will take place on the
22nd of March 2004 at the National Bank of Greece in Makarios Avenue
at 6.30pm.

Honour to the First Lady
Many thanks to our member Rtn Keti Chrysostomou who gave us the opportunity to present to the First Lady and 50 other esteemed Ladies our Club’s projects and action. We have honoured Mrs Fotini Papadopoulou with a special gift, design of Giannopoulos Jewelers. The First Lady in her reply stressed that she is so touched by our work therefore she will support and help our Club always.
During the Rotary year 2001 - 2002 the project for the Mobile Drugs Unit
with the Nicosia Police Drugs Squad was completed which resulted in the purchase of an Iveco van (US$15,000). With computer and projection equipment the van will cover the Republic of Cyprus, visiting schools, youth centres, military establishments etc. to educate young people in the dangers of drug abuse. The Club has since 1998/99 given the proceeds of the annual Auction
conducted at the Christmas lunch meeting to orphans in Armenia who have lost parents during earthquakes which accounted for 50,000 causalities and leaving over 4,000 children orphaned. This was repeated last year with nearly US$3,000 being given for the purchase of warm clothing, shoes, foodstuffs and essentials.Christmas cards were also sold again - C£711 being generously donated by
Rtn. Bob McClure for the benefit of the Association for the Welfare of People with Mental Handicap.Make A Wish was chosen by the Club for its main project in 2001/02. This
organisation exists for the benefit of children suffering with cancer and related life threatening diseases. PP Kevork Mahdessian and Pres. elect David Beckett visited a four year old boy and his parents in the mountains to present him with a two tier bunk bed and furniture for him to share a bedroom with his brother. The young lad had received extensive chemotherapy treatment since a very early age which had involved him travelling the mountains roads to Nicosia on each occasion.A fashion show was held at an afternoon tea party at the Forum Intercontinental Hotel which resulted in over C$2,500 being given to Make A Wish. A jazz Concert was also held later in the summer which provided a further C$1,700 to this worthy cause.
Other fund raising events - including one for the flood disaster victims in Prague - have been held which added to these efforts as well as giving to other emergency situations overseas as they have arisen.
In the Rotary year 2002/03 the Club has chosen the Association for the Welfare of People with Mental Handicap as the key project and in particular to provide them with capital towards re-roofing their Day Care Centre. The Association runs two day care centres in Nicosia where 22 persons, most of them adult refugees, have such severe and profound physical and mental handicaps that they are not accepted by any other institution in society. An ambitious programme has been set for the Aspelia choir and friends to sing carols during the weeks leading up to Christmas.
The annual Auction is planned for 20th December - again for the Armenian orphans and on that occasion we will be giving donations received recently to the Mentally Handicapped Association and Make A Wish.
The Aspelia Scholarship Foundation Trust has provided scholarships to three students at University, two at the University of Cyprus and one at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom.
A Business Ethics Panel Discussion was held in October when three eminent speakers responded to our Vocational Services Director Michalis Avraam to discuss Professional Codes of Conduct - their significance and role in the newly developing financial sector. This was a "first" of its type of project in the Vocational Services Avenue for the Club.
By the end of December we will have donated in the last six months US$5,000 to the Rotary Foundation PolioPlus programme.
Whilst our work will continue as in the past in many different activities, humanitarian service will be a corner stone for our work in Cyprus and internationally. The following Schedule of Projects executed since our Club Charter on 5th November 1995 is shown for information and interest.
